Reading Young Adult Literature (YAL) books can make one be connected with reading. If at first the person does not like reading, YAL has a role to play. Because YAL books have themes that are connected with young adult’s world so reading the books make sense to them. Doing the course has made me realize that I haven’t been an avid reader. All this wile I was reading books but I was not really reading them. When reading the YAL textbooks recommended by my lecturer it dawned on me that I would be able to use the books to teach my students who are basically young adults. There are so many social problems out there that need to be addressed so in making a connection to these YAL books at least my students can start reading and think about their lives. Brown has discussed in her book that YAL meets students’ needs by promoting self-knowledge, the knowledge of others, and knowledge of a world view. It is true that reading YAL promotes self-knowledge. How is this? You read and you get knowledge about yourself. You relate to the characters in the book and you see yourself in the characters. You understand how the character feels about something. You have self revelation. You understand yourself better. YAL promotes the knowledge of others because when we read a YAL book we would then discover other people’s ideas that help us to solve the conflict within us. We realize that sometimes we need other people’s opinions and thoughts to understand the world better. Other people’s knowledge would help us in becoming better individuals. Lastly, in the part of promoting knowledge of world view, we become more aware of our surroundings and more sensitive to others. We don’t become selfish people living in our own world. We don’t find the world a cruel place to live in. We embrace the world that we live in.
